easy to handle and install. Designed to
friction-fit in standard 2 X 10 cathedral
ceiling consuuction, R-30C Batts elim-
inate the need, zn most applications,
for ventilation baffles. Tnimming and
fabricadon can be done with an ordi-
nary utility knife.
Technica! Design Consideratfons Installation
The kraft facing on this insulation
will buna and rraust not be left exposed.
Install facing in substantial contact
with the finish material. Protect from
open flame or other heat source.
Cathedral ceiling applications
require that the building envelope block
the movement or air from the outdoor
environment to the conditioned space.
Neither the insulation nor its facing
should be relied upon to provide an air
barrier. Failure to provide an air barrier
could lead to loss of thermal control,
discomfort of the bailding occupants
and frozen pipes.
Owens Corning recommends that a
vapor retarder should be used in most
climates. In climates requiring winter
heating, the vapor retarder should be
placed toward the warm-in-winter side.
In humid clirnates, like the Gu1f Coast,
follow local building practices for vapor
retarder placement. In all applications
utilizing a vapor retarder, maintaining
the facing integrity may be important
for effective moisture / hunnirlity
control. Repair any punctures or tears
in the facing by taping. Foliow the tape
manufacture's appIication recornmen-
dations.
Insulation installed too close to
light fixtures may affect the luminaire's
performance. Do not instAll insulation
on top of or within 3 inches of recessed
light fixtures unless the fixhires are
approved for such use. This is a
reqturement of the National Electric
Code.
R-30C Thermal Batts are intended to
be friction-fit between wood rafters.
In applica[ions with irregular spaced
rafrers, staple the facing flange to the
bottom face of the roof rafter at 8 to
12 inch intervals. Tightly abut batts to
prevent thermal leaks.
Provide vent openings at eave and
peak. Cathedral ceiling insulation
should be installed to provide a min-
imum 1" ventilation passageway
between the roof deck and insulation.
Use a vent baffle to assure proper
clearance where necessary.

joist doubled. Based on 40 psf residential live load, L/360 deflection criteria and a botmce factor, we
have determined that the maximum spail of this particLilar joist configuration is 1 T-10". As the span
length approaches the maxiuium span, the joists can still sag and feel somewhat bouncy even though
