Cox, P.E., Assistant Director of Engineering -Development Re: Ordinance 21-04 Requesting Approval to Change the Name of a portion of Wilcox Road (between Perimeter Drive and Post Road) to Holt Drive in the City of Dublin, Ohio Summary: The Division of Engineering Staff, on recommendation by the Division of Police, is proposing to change the street name of a portion of Wilcox Road between Perimeter Drive and Post Road. This segment of Wilcox Road was disconnected many years ago when the limited-access freeway portion of US 33/SR 161 was constructed between I-270 and Post Road. There are currently no addresses that would be affected by this change. As staff contemplated a new street name, there was preference for using a name with some historical significance. As a result, information available on the Chamber of Commerce website regarding the history of Dublin was reviewed. It revealed that after the Revolutionary War, the United States Government gave 2000 acres of land along the Scioto River to Lieutenant James Holt as payment for his service. In 1802, Pennsylvanians Peter and Benjamin Sells purchased 400 acres of this land for their brother, John. Today, the site of the Sells Brothers' original purchase is known as Historic Dublin. Therefore, since the name of Lieutenant Holt is not used in another manner to recognize and honor his significance in Dublin history, the street name "Holt Drive" seemed appropriate for this section of existing road. Recommendation: Staff recommends the street name for the portion of Wilcox Road between Perimeter Drive and Post Road be changed to Holt Drive. Staff is presenting this ordinance as a first reading for Council consideration and further recommends the ordinance proceed to a second reading at the Apri15, 2004 City Council meeting for adoption.
