Harding, Director of Human Resources Re: Ordinance No. 54-OS Authorizing an Additional Police Officer Position SUMMARY Attached for your consideration, please find Ordinance No. 54-OS authorizing an additional Police Officer position for a temporary period of time. Staff is requesting this additional authorization given that during the most recent recruitment/selection process, staff inadvertently hired one additional Police Officer above the authorized number of positions (53) indicated in the 2005 Operating Budget. Because all members of this group of new hires are high-quality recruits, Staff would like to take advantage of a unique situation and retain the entire group. In order to do so, Council would need to authorize an additional position at the rank of Police Officer. Staff is requesting that this additional position be authorized for a temporary period of time. The Division of Police has been notified that one of its members at the rank of Police Officer will be retiring in 2006 and as soon as this retirement or another position vacancy occurs in 2006, this temporary authorization will expire. RECOMMENDATION Staff recommends that Council adopt Ordinance No. 54-OS authorizing an additional Police Officer position for a temporary period of time.
