Re: Ordinance 23 -15 — Authorizing Additional Police Officer Positions for a Temporary
Period of Time
Background
Attached for your consideration is Ordinance No. 23 -15, authorizing three additional Police Officer
positions above the Division's authorized staffing of 68 sworn officers for the current fiscal year.
Staff is requesting these additional authorizations to recruit, hire and train police officer candidates
in advance of known staff retirements. This will provide the opportunity to hire and begin training
new officers in advance of those retirements, which have been confirmed as occurring before the
end of calendar year 2015. In order to do so, Council would need to authorize three additional
positions at the rank of Police Officer above the current authorized staffing.
Staff is requesting these additional positions be authorized for a temporary period of time. This
temporary authorization will expire on December 31, 2015. Future adjustments to compensate for
retiring staff will be reflected in the Division's future operating budgets.
Recommendation
Staff recommends dispense with the second reading /public hearing and pass Ordinance 23 -15 by
emergency at the March 9 Council meeting.
