Re: Ohio Bicentennial Legacy Tree Planting Initiative
Indian Run Park Reforestation Project, Resolution 22-02
Initiated by: Fred Hahn, Director of Grounds and Facilities
The Grounds and Facilities Division has prepared a grant application for the purchase and
installation of trees at Indian Run Park through the Ohio Department of Natural Resources,
Division of Forestry. The purpose of the grant program is to help meet Governor Taft's
challenge of planting "one new tree for each Ohio school child - more than two million - by the
state's Bicentennial in 2003," In the Indian Run fishing pond area, there is a large
unprogrammed space that would make a good site for a native tree stand, The variety of tree
species selected for the project includes Pecan, American Beech, White Oak, Scarlet Oak,
Chinkapin Oak, Eastern Redbud, American Plum and Pagoda Dogwood, The application
stresses several objectives as outlined in the Community Plan for protecting watersheds,
enhancing the tree planting and maintenance program, protecting area wildlife, and the
development of a strong tree preservation program. The grant request is $15,000 with a City
match of$15,000, resulting in the planting of 150, two-inch caliper trees, The City's matching
funds have been appropriated in the "Reforestation" account.
