Re: Resolution 06-08, Requesting Congressional Support of Federal Funding to
Study US 33 Widening
Summary:
In 2006, the City of Dublin participated in the MORPC/ODOT I-270/US 33 Northwest Freeway
Study which examined transportation issues along I-270 and US 33 through Dublin and as far north
as US 42 in Union County. The study confirmed what we in Dublin are reminded of every day -
the US 33 Corridor from Post Road to I-270 is extremely crowded and needs to be widened.
Furthermore, the interchange at I-270 and US 33 requires major changes in order to function at an
acceptable level. Because this is a major transportation and freight route both regionally and in the
state of Ohio, the project should be a top priority for future funding opportunities.
Although transportation funding is currently difficult to obtain from non-local sources, with the
federal reauthorization of transportation fimding scheduled for 2009, now is the time for Dublin to
work with our legislators in Washington to determine if monies could become available for this
important project. Accordingly, we are proposing that the City Council adopt the attached resolution
seeking federal monies to fund a study for the widening of US 33 between Post Road and the I-270
interchange.
This is a key first step in demonstrating to our Congressional delegation that Dublin is serious about
these transportation projects -- and that these projects have similar state and nationwide implication
as other projects being promoted in Central Ohio. This resolution announces our desire to create a
partnership with the federal government in addressing very real transportation needs on US 33 and
I-270 -which play a role in the national movement of freight in addition to facilitating the creation
of jobs in Central Ohio. Finally, the resolution (and letters of support we'll be gathering this spring),
begins to highlight to the Governor and local stakeholders our commitment to addressing these
transportation needs.
Recommendation:
Staff recommends that the City Council approve Resolution 06-08, a Resolution requesting
Congressional Support in obtaining $750,000 to assist in advancing the widening of the Dublin
Corridor, US 33 from Post Road to I-270 in Dublin, Ohio.
